No, That's Not What Republicans Think
This is the first of a series of posts that takes random comments from the internet that try to describe what Republicans are up to (generally from a left/progressive perspective). Each one of these comments is wrong. Keep in mind that I'm not even remotely sympathetic to Republican perspectives.
Ruling in the minority
I thinks its a matter of adhering to norms. The Republicans have abandoned any pretext of doing that. Rule by the minority when they are the minority.
Republicans see nothing wrong with a system of constitutional government that allows them to be in power with only a minority of the popular vote because:
- they believe (or claim to believe) that this system ultimately protects the rights of minorities at all times, which they claim is important (and probably is).
- this isn't a democracy, and we do not decide things by a popular vote.
- the USA is a federal republic of states, and that anything which tries to pretend that we're just one big country is counter-factual and at odds with the Constitution.
- the structure of the Senate isn't about giving outsize power to small population states, but about representing the states themselves equally (while the House of Representatives represents the people). Put differently, that's the constitutional structure of the United States of America, and whether or not you like it, that's how our country's government is built. Maybe the states shouldn't all have equal representation, but in our government, as it was created and remains to this day, that's what they get.
These things are all true, to some degree or another, even if you wish that one or more of them was not true, or was somehow a little different. Republicans have not abandoned "norms" or "pretexts" ... they are clear and consistent in their continued quest for a society in which rich people can do whatever they want with "their" money.
